I was happy to read this Chronicle article by David Wiley. He had me hoping I have been right about getting faculty to buy into placing content online. Whether in a YouTube channel, a blog, or in a “portfolio” the content is shareable and there are unknown possibilities just placing there. Some good and some bad I suppose, but I have to believe the potential outweighs the potential disasters.
I have been putting the pressure on to get faculty to use the web space the college provides them place content they create for classes either there, or in other publicly available spaces like YouTube or Blogs. There is still the challenge of “being you” on the internet. Many still create profile names or channel names that disassociate the real person form the internet web site. I vote as a professional development tool, a marketing tool, and as a way to educate your peers and students, we place the content we have developed in these spaces as often as we are able. And we place it there using a name that is us, rather than “beachdude376Q.”
Has anyone ever told you that you are an incurable optimist? Thank you for being one, especially in the constant face of those of use who aren't quite there yet :)
ReplyDeleteYea Todd! I know several faculty who would NOT have put content / courses online without you - and I'm one of them!
